Do the things you want to do as much as the things you need to do
Does anyone else put off the things they want to do all too often? Just me? I am really good at taking care of business. For me, this means doing things I need to do, such as going to work, washing dishes, andvkeeping the house relatively clean. You know the list. I do these things with joy, most of the time. I might begrudge a laundry basket here and there, but I am happy to do most of the work required to make a happy home life.
The things that I reeeeaaally want to do fall under a different category. They are not even always big bucket items, but they are things I feel are important for me to do. A blog post here. A book chapter there. Calling my sister back within 24 hours (Sorry Sis). It’s not that I always lack the time to do these things. After doing all the things that need to be done, I find that I don’t have the energy to do the other stuff. So, I go months without blogging even though the blog is super accessible on my phone. Or I remember to call my sister back after the day is too far gone and she’s probably pulling another all-nighter at the library.
So, for all of our sakes, let’s commit to doing the things we want to do as much as the things we need to do. Finding that magical balance between the two isn’t easy in many cases. It’s possible, though. For me, I know it begins with making the extra effort to write the blog post. It means giving up one very mind-numbing episode of my favorite shows after the babies go to sleep. It means reminding myself that I do want to do these things - that I need to do them.
I will let you know when I have become better at this particular balancing act. It might be just what I need to continue sharing my musings with you on here.
