The great job search journey of 2018
For years now, I have done a monthly evaluation of different aspects of my life. February is always the deepest because it is when I start a new trip around the sun. It is also the month during which my husband and I celebrate our anniversary. On top of that, it is Black History Month, which deserves an entire post of its own. This month, I have thought a lot about where I have been and where I am going professionally.
February 2018 has challenged me on a level that I have not seen in a while. For the first time in years, I find myself on the job market. I spent the first three years as a mom managing a small homeless shelter that serves families with children. It was an amazing experience for me. The work was meaningful in every way, especially when families were able to secure housing and leave the shelter. I could always see the relief in the parents' faces and the joy the children had.
For the last year and a half, I have been putting my editing skills to work for ReliefWeb. It was one of those perfectly aligned opportunities that make life just what it should be. Its end brings with it a new chapter of life that I am eager to begin. It is the first time since I became a working woman that I have no full time job lined up. It is both exciting and nerve wracking, and I am ready to see what God has in store for me.
For the time being, I am honing my writing skills at the Refugee Center Online as a contributing writer. The more I learn about RCO, the more I realize how much impact it makes for refugee communities around the world. The resources available on the website go beyond just survival for new Americans. It is a tool to help people thrive personally and professionally, and I am honored to be a part of it.
